Myth-Sugar consumption displaces other nutrients

Sugar is an important ingredient in many nutrient-rich foods. In recent years, sugar has been accused of directly reducing the amounts of vitamins and minerals, particularly calcium, that children, teens and adults consume.

Critical analysis of several U.S. diet surveys show that the consumption of sugar has little influence on vitamin and mineral intakes.

The reality is this: Vitamin and mineral intakes are determined by the whole diet, not a single ingredient like sugar. That is why it is important to eat a variety of nutritious foods. If people ate only carrots for example, they would have diets deficient in most essential nutrients.
